did you know?

  • ITS provides a 24/7 Voice Activated Directory of NYU staff and faculty telephone numbers. Call 1-212-998-
1212, select 1, then speak or dial the name of the person who you are trying to reach.
  • You can set a personal email address of your choosing to use as an alternative to your NetID email address. You can then choose to use this address in your NYU Directory listing.

Coming Soon: NYU Directory Upgrade
On June 1, 2012, the NYU Directory will be significantly upgraded to offer a variety of new features, including:

  • Improved information, fed directly from authoritative NYU data sources such as student and human resources systems.
  • Enhanced searching capabilities using global location filters.
  • The ability to add and update certain information, such as website addresses, preferred name, and preferred office phone number, via the NYU Start page.

The below instructions refer to the current NYU Directory; check back on June 1st for updated information.

About the NYU Directory

The NYU Directory contains the names, addresses, and email information for all NYU faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as those students who have chosen to be listed. It also contains campus facility information. It can be accessed through the Directory channel in the Home tab of NYUHome, at www.nyu.edu/search.directory.html, and via the "Search..." box that appears at the top of pages on the main NYU website. Note: When using the "Search..." box on NYU web pages, click the "People" link that appears to search the NYU Directory (as opposed to searching the entire NYU website).

Voice Activated Directory

You can be directly connected by telephone to NYU faculty, staff, and administrators by calling NYU's main number at 1-212-998-1212. This service combines voice recognition, dial-by-name functionality, and other technologies to locate a listing requested by a caller, and then transfer the caller to the appropriate staff or faculty member's office number.

Add, Remove, or Change a Directory Listing

Staff/Faculty/Administrators

All NYU faculty, staff, and administrators are automatically listed in the NYU Directory. If your name is not included in the NYU Directory or the Voice Activated Directory, please submit a request for help with your name and NYU NetID (found on your NYUCard) using the Ask ITS contact form at www.nyu.edu/its/askits/contactus.

If your information has changed or you find an error in your name, affiliation, or campus address, send your full name, your NYU NetID, and detailed information about the required correction using the Ask ITS contact form at www.nyu.edu/its/askits/contactus.

NYU faculty, staff, and administrators wishing to change the email address in their directory listing can log into NYUHome and update their directory address preferences. (See the NYU Directory page for detailed instructions on how to update your directory email address.)

NYU students wishing to be listed in or removed from the NYU Directory may visit http://start.nyu.edu to do so. (See this Ask ITS Knowledgebase article for detailed instructions on how to add or remove student directory listings.)

Students

In order for your information to appear in the NYU Directory you must choose to be listed. To do so:

  1. Point your web browser to the ITS Start Page at http://start.nyu.edu.
  2. Log in with your NYU NetID and password, then select the Online Student Directory link.
  3. Read the conditions of publishing your information to determine how much you wish to make available to the general public.
  4. Once you have confirmed your selection, it will take effect within 24 hours.

If you are a Law School student and cannot find your name in the Law School's Graduate Student Directory, you must first follow the instructions above to activate your NYU Directory listing.

Your name and affiliation in the Directory are based on information from the Registrar's Student Information System (SIS) database. If your name is misspelled or your NYU affiliation is incorrect on your official University records, you should consult directly with the Registrar's Office to advise them of the error.

If your name and/or affiliation is correct on your official records but not in the Directory, send detailed information about the required correction using the Ask ITS contact form at www.nyu.edu/its/askits/contactus. If you want to change the email address that is listed for you in the Directory, see the next FAQ.

Change the Email Address in Your Directory Listing

By default, the email address listed in the NYU Directory is NetID@nyu.edu where "NetID" is your NYU NetID. If you wish, you can choose to have an additional personal email address, which automatically directs messages to your NetID@nyu.edu address. If you haven't already created a personal address, log into NYUHome and click the Preferences link in the top right corner. Under the options for Your Email, find "Personal address," click EDIT, then follow the instructions provided. To list your personal address in the NYU Directory (recommended), find "NYU Directory address" in the same section of the Preferences, click EDIT, then update the Directory address to your new personal address.

If you previously chose to be listed in the NYU Online Student Directory but have changed your mind, you can remove your information from the Directory by following these steps:

  1. Point your web browser to the NYU Start Page at http://start.nyu.edu.
  2. Log in with your NYU NetID and password, then select the Online Student Directory link.
  3. If asked, enter your password again to confirm your identity.
  4. Read the conditions of publishing and not publishing your information, then click the DO NOT PUBLISH button.
  5. Once you have confirmed your selection, it will take effect within 24 hours.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you search for a specific person in the Directory and can't find a listing, it may be due to one or more of the following issues:

  • The person may be listed under a nickname or under their full name. Try searching for them using their last name only.
  • He or she may be a new staff or faculty member. There is a short processing time between the day a person is hired and the day their listing is added to the Directory. Try again in a few days.
  • He or she may be a student who has opted not to include their listing in the NYU Directory (see above).
