IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING
YOUR ACCOUNT on i4.nyu.edu

The i4.nyu.edu machine, through which you gain access to your Web site on the main NYU Web server, www.nyu.edu, will be retired on Friday, June 2, 2006. Your account will be migrated automatically to a new, more robust server, which will retain the i4.nyu.edu name.

NOTE:
The new i4 system will not have a mail server.

How Does This Affect You?

When the new i4 machine is deployed on Monday, June 5, 2006, it will only accept SECURE connections (in order to preserve the confidentiality of your NetID/Password and any other information you transmit).

This means that older file transfer programs you may have downloaded from ITS in the past will no longer work. Only secure FTP (SFTP) file transfers will be accepted.

What You Need to Do BEFORE Your Account is Migrated

  1. Download new secure file transfer software:
Prior to the migration, we encourage you to download both a secure shell (SSH) program and a secure file transfer (SFTP) program from the Software channel in NYUHome. ITS provides SSH software for Windows called PuTTY. Mac OS X users may use the Terminal program (found within the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder). ITS distributes the SFTP programs Fugu v1.2 and Fetch v5.0 (for Macintosh) and WinSCP v3.7.6 (for Windows). To access the Software channel, log into NYUHome and select the Files tab. Or, visit the ITS Software page.

  2. Clean-up your i4 home directory:
Please help us by removing any old and/or unrelated files from your i4 home directory (the files you see when you first connect to i4 - not your files on the main Web server). The i4 server is a shared environment and disk space is not intended to be used for storage of archived or personal content. Materials should be transferred to the hard disk on your local machine and/or backed-up to disk or CD.

What You Need to Do AFTER Your Account is Migrated

  1. Make a Secure Shell (SSH) connection:
A one time-only login using a secure shell program (SSH) must be made to the new i4 machine in order to finalize the setup of your new account.

Please review the information within the NYU Web Guide's SSH Tutorial section for further instructions.

  2. Review access to your account:
As with the current i4 machine, your login to the new server will be your NetID and password. This is the same information that you use to authenticate your access to many services, such as NYUHome, throughout the University. Therefore, it would be imprudent to share this information with anyone, even trusted co-workers.

If your staff or student employees need access to update your Web site, they must apply for their own account. Please have them review our i4 account application information.

    Note:
No new i4 accounts will be created the week of May 29 - June 2, 2006.

Information About Your Files and System Unavailability

Commencing Friday, June 2 at 5:00 p.m, access to i4 will be suspended while we perform the migration. During this time, you will not be able to edit your Web pages or access i4. However, your www.nyu.edu site WILL still be accessible over the Web.

As part of the migration, we will move all of the existing files from your i4 home directory to the new machine. Additionally, any crontabs you may have created will also be automatically moved.

The migration will end by 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 5, at which time you may access your migrated account.
