InterCEP Convenes Roundtable on Providing Private Sector Resources to Government in Aftermath of Hurricane

August 9, 2007 2:39 PM

August 2007 - At the request of FEMA, on August 9, 2007, InterCEP convened key representatives from the public and private sectors to address, in advance of disaster, the critical resource needs of impacted regions following a severe hurricane. Leading retailers and logistics providers joined with leaders from federal, state, and local governments to discuss likely resource requirements which would exceed those available from government sources. InterCEP will continue to work with these representatives to better identify gaps, develop strategies and structures to address this critical need.

InterCEP utilized the Draft Program Standard for Mobilizing Corporate Resources to Disaster (which the Center developed in 2006) to guide the discussion. Participants' insights were captured by InterCEP staff at the event and Roundtable proceedings will be released in the near term after they are vetted with participants.

The Program Standard was excerpted from an InterCEP white paper released in January 2007, entitled "Mobilizing Corporate Resources to Disasters." This paper evaluated the current and potential role of businesses in providing key resources to governments and NGO's for emergency management activities. The research effort was supported by a grant from the communications company, Avaya, Inc. The research was based in large part on the contributions from dozens of executives and leaders from the private and public sectors, many of whom participated in two Executive Forums in New York City co-hosted by Avaya.
