InterCEP Hosts Session on Unified Disaster Communications and Messaging

July 12, 2007 2:41 PM

July 2007 - In conjunction with FEMA, InterCEP convened a focused regional roundtable for government officials to identify and discuss current challenges and potential solutions to enhance effective coordination of external messaging between federal, state, and local authorities during a hurricane. This July 12, 2007 event brought together senior operations and communications personnel from multiple government jurisdictions in the FEMA Region II area including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The Roundtable used the External Affairs function (ESF 15) under the U.S. National Response Plan as the framework for discussion. The Roundtable focused on identifying potential solutions to better inform actions to protect property, mitigate damages and impacts to individuals, families, businesses, communities, and the environment, as well as facilitate their recovery. A special exercise is planned for November to address the need for more effective and coordinated messaging to the general public and to the media in advance of, during, and after disasters.
