InterCEP's Continues Work on International Security & Continuity Standards

May 12, 2007 2:08 PM

May 2007 -- Bill Raisch (Director of InterCEP) continues the Center’s focus on the development of international standards and guidance as part of a multi-national International Standards Organization (ISO) taskforce of the Technical Committee on Societal Security (TC223). The group convened again on May 9-11, 2007, in Orlando, Florida. The task force continued its work on developing an international standard on emergency preparedness. The work built upon the earlier International Workshop Agreement (IWA) 5 which was a product of the 19 nation conference that InterCEP hosted in Florence in April 2006. Bill also traveled to Brussels in March 2007 as the U.S. Representative for the ISO/TC223 meeting.

The goal of the task force effort is the integration of the relevant standards of five different nations to produce a Publicly Accessible Specification on Incident Preparedness and Organizational Security.

IWA 5 was reported to TC223 in November 2006. For access to IWA 5, please contact Matt Deane at the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). During this conference, more than seventy emergency management and business continuity professionals from sixteen countries around the world gathered for the IWA Forum on Emergency Preparedness. The Conference was held at New York University’s campus in Florence, Italy, and in conjunction with ISO and ANSI (the American National Standards Institute)

The forum was held at the request of ISO and the ANSI which served as secretariat for the forum. InterCEP cooperated with ISO and ANSI in bringing together public and private sector officials to advance international cooperation in emergency preparedness and to respond to the standards community's call for an international deliverable in the area of emergency preparedness.

InterCEP and ANSI continue to partner in advancing preparedness standards. The Center is committed to advancing private sector readiness through integration of its efforts with corporate, governmental and other organizational stakeholders including the standards community. Bill Raisch, Director of InterCEP, serves on the Steering Committee of ANSI's Homeland Security Standards Panel.

InterCEP also hosted the International Public-Private Preparedness Summit (April 27-28) to discuss ways in which public and private sectors can share lessons learned, preparations for pandemics and catastrophes, and ways in which this vital field can move forward in saving lives and enterprise continuity in the wake of an emergency event. The 2nd Annual Florence Forum will take place May 3-4, 2007. Click here to learn more about this event.
