May 2007 The International Center for Enterprise Preparedness (InterCEP) hosted its second annual International Public-Private Preparedness Summit on May 3 and 4 at New York University’s campus in Florence, Italy. The Florence Forum uniquely brings together high level public officials and senior corporate executives across multiple industries to address issues of international security and emergency preparedness. Representatives from three continents and 11 countries participated in this year’s Forum.
The Forum addressed key current, and timely, issues and took a look at the horizon to evolving issues of importance to both the public and private sectors. The agenda included discussions on recent catastrophes with first hand reports of challenges and lessons learned. Also addressed were evolving threats to address issues such as Avian Flu, terrorism and cyber as well as preparedness approaches for each. The 2007 Forum was again an off-the-record facilitated roundtable discussion focused on the sharing of insights and experience in this vital arena and the development of collaborative public-private strategies. Proceedings from the Florence Forum are in development and will be widely distributed when available. InterCEP Associate Director Matt Statler said that “these roundtable discussions will help shape our action-oriented research agenda for the coming year, and we look forward to ongoing and future collaborations with many of the participants.”
InterCEP was especially proud to welcome its keynote speakers: Sir David Veness, United Nations, UnderSecretary General for Safety and Security; Tarique Ghaffur, London Metropolitan Police, Assistant Commissioner, and Head of Security for Olympic games in 2012; Al Martinez-Fonts, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Private Sector Office, Assistant Secretary; and Mike Foynes, Microsoft, International Security Head. These key players gave focus and an invaluable contribution to the Summit’s agenda and proceedings.
The Florence Forum is also uniquely built by its Steering Committee. This Committee has been drawn from senior management of the Global 1000 and senior public sector officials and reflects the active involvement of such firms as Microsoft, General Electric, IBM, Wal-Mart, Morgan Stanley, BNP Paribas, Target, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, FM Global Insurance and others.
