- Corporations Can Increase Resilience by Mobilizing Resources to Disasters

In 2006 and 2007, InterCEP undertook a major research project focused on the mobilization of corporate resources to disasters. Some of the findings from this research effort appeared recently in the International Journal of Technology, Policy and Management, in a Special Issue on Developments in Business Resiliency and Disaster Recovery, guest edited by Dr. Holmes E. Miller of Muhlenberg College.

- Supply Chain and Logistics Firms Seek Increased Resilience

In August, InterCEP Associate Director Dr. Matt Statler attended the 43rd Annual International Logistics Conference and Exhibition, organized by SOLE - the International Society of Logistics. The overall theme of the conference was the transformation of logistics systems in the global economy, and the keynote presentation by Dr. Yossi Sheffi of MIT focused on the importance of resilience for logistics operations.

- Initial Working Group Proceedings on New Private Sector Preparedness Certification Program Presented to Accrediting Body & Homeland Security:

Both the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the accrediting body for the new Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Certification Program, ANAB, requested the proceedings of the InterCEP Working Groups to inform its initial planning activity for the program. The proceedings were provided by InterCEP directly to ANAB and DHS.

- Standard & Poor's Contemplates Enterprise Risk Management in All Corporate Credit Ratings

Rating agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) has recently proposed to introduce analysis of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) into the corporate credit ratings process. - InterCEP Will Hold Multiple Forums with Key Stakeholders to Inform the Development of the Certification Program & an Integrated Business Case

To inform both government activity and that of the ultimate accreditation body, InterCEP will start to convene targeted groups of key stakeholders to obtain their input on the accreditation and certification process and the integration of key business incentives. The majority of these topically focused forums will be held in advance of a general National Roundtable to be held at NYU in November. Each of these advance forums will address a different incentive area or business segment. The forums will include both virtual and onsite formats to make them more accessible to key stakeholders. The forums will seek to capture key issues and preliminarily develop potential strategies to facilitate bottom-line benefits and incentives through the certification program. They may also form the foundation for ongoing advisory task groups in targeted areas.

- InterCEP Adds Extensive Literature Review to Clearinghouse on the Business Case

August 2007 - InterCEP has advanced its continuing goal of providing a single online clearinghouse of key "business case" research to aid corporations in evaluating corporate resilience and preparedness investments. An extensive literature review has been released which is an annotated bibliography designed to provide executive decision makers with a series of articles and publications which address the business case for preparedness. Eknoor Salaria championed this initial effort during his Summer 2007 Internship, and will continue to assist the Center in advancing this database.

August 2007 - At the request of FEMA, on August 9, 2007, InterCEP convened key representatives from the public and private sectors to address, in advance of disaster, the critical resource needs of impacted regions following a severe hurricane. Leading retailers and logistics providers joined with leaders from federal, state, and local governments to discuss likely resource requirements which would exceed those available from government sources. May 2007 -- Bill Raisch (Director of InterCEP) continues the Center’s focus on the development of international standards and guidance as part of a multi-national International Standards Organization (ISO) taskforce of the Technical Committee on Societal Security (TC223). The group convened again on May 9-11, 2007, in Orlando, Florida. The task force continued its work on developing an international standard on emergency preparedness. The work built upon the earlier International Workshop Agreement (IWA) 5 which was a product of the 19 nation conference that InterCEP hosted in Florence in April 2006. Bill also traveled to Brussels in March 2007 as the U.S. Representative for the ISO/TC223 meeting.

- InterCEP Working with Insurance Industry to Develop a Common Assessment Methodology to Reward Preparedness in Underwriting

InterCEP is working with the insurance industry on acknowledging preparedness in the underwriting of business insurance. Generally, the insurance industry is positively disposed to acknowledging preparedness efforts by corporations and giving them credit for preparedness in determining ultimate insurance premiums and policy terms (deductibles, etc.). This has been validated through a diversity of InterCEP Roundtables and interviews. However, what is often lacking is a simple way for insurance firms to assess that a firm has in fact prepared for emergencies. You cannot reward preparedness without first confirming that it exists.

- InterCEP Releases White Paper on Mobilizing Business Resources to Support Disasters

The International Center for Enterprise Preparedness has released a white paper on the current and potential role of businesses in providing key resources to governments and NGO's for emergency management activities. The research effort was supported by a grant from the communications company, Avaya, Inc. The research was based in large part on the contributions from dozens of executives and leaders from the private and public sectors, many of whom participated in two Executive Forums in New York City co-hosted by Avaya.
