Health-Related Privileges and Discounts

Medical Care

The mission of the University Health Center is to provide high-quality, accessible, and cost-effective services to its patients. The center offers treatment, prevention, education, and health promotion services with state-of-the-art equipment and from highly qualified health care professionals. Many of these services are available to you, including:

  • evaluation and treatment of minor work-related injuries and illnesses
  • a full service pharmacy, with discounted over-the-counter medications and vitamins
  • optometry services
  • laboratory, physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiology, and ultrasound (all require a referral from your health care provider)
  • an annual medical examination

You should check with your health insurance plan to be certain that medical services obtained from the University Health Center will be covered by your insurance. In the event that insurance does not cover these services, you will be responsible for payment.

A note about work-related injury: In the case of a life- or limb-threatening emergency, please call 911.

In the case of a work-related emergency that is not life- or limb-threatening, follow the procedures detailed under Workers' Compensation—How To Obtain Medical Treatment for a Work-Related Condition.

Dental Services at NYU
New York University Kriser Dental Center Clinic

As a courtesy to NYU employees and their families who are covered by the NYU Dental Assistance Plan (Metropolitan Life), the Dental Center waives the annual deductible and accepts Metropolitan Life insurance as full payment (up to the yearly maximum) for treatment provided by senior honor students under faculty supervision. Comprehensive dental care is available, including preventive dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics and oral surgery.

For patients whose dental needs require special attention, the Dental Center also has postdoctoral programs in all specialties, including pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, prosthodontics, implants, and temporomandibular joint disorders. The Dental Center waives the annual deductible but accepts insurance as only partial payment for treatment provided in these advanced programs. You are responsible for the balance of fees.

The faculty of NYU's College of Dentistry offers a variety of services, including general dentistry and specialized dental care. You receive a 15% discount off the practice's regular fees. In addition, the practice offers 24-hour emergency care.

Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic

The Steinhardt School of Education's Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology direct this clinical facility. The clinic has reduced rates for NYU employees and family members and offers the following services:

  • individual speech, language, and audiologic services
  • assessment of speech, language, and hearing problems
  • therapy for all types of communication disorders (speech, language, fluency, and voice)
  • group therapy for adults with speech and/or language disorders resulting from stroke, brain injury, and Parkinson's Disease
  • speech and language therapy for children and adults

Long-Term Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis

Long-term psychotherapy for individuals and families provided by advanced doctoral students in the FAS department of psychology. Call for fees.

Postdoctoral Psychology Clinic

Long-term individual psychoanalysis for adults provided by therapists in psychoanalytic training. Those seeking treatment must commit to three to four sessions per week. Call the clinic for an application and for fee information.

University Plaza Nursery School is a parent cooperative providing creative, nurturing, and enriching programs serving 3- and 4-year-old children. Programs run from mid-September to mid-June, and for six weeks during the summer.

The Greenwich House Preschool

The Greenwich House Preschool and its associated programs, gives priority to members of the NYU community. The part-day and full-day preschool program accepts children between 2½ and 5 years old. NYU provides a limited amount of need-based aid to employees who enroll their children in the preschool program. Contact the Office of Work-Life Services at (212) 998-9085 for more information.

Greenwich House Music School

The Greenwich House Music School offers music, art, and ballet classes for children 2 to 6 years old, and instrumental and voice classes for children through high school. Additionally, the school provides a variety of programming for children ages 2 through 4 during the school year and for six weeks in summer.

For grades 5 through 12, the Little Red Schoolhouse/Elisabeth Irwin High School and Friends Seminary offer a discount to children of NYU employees. In exchange, qualified senior students from those schools may audit classes at NYU. For more details, please call the school directly.

Emergency Dependent Care Program

The University has contracted with Caregivers on Call (COC) to provide up to 50 hours of emergency childcare or adult/eldercare per calendar year for each eligible employee who has registered for the program. An “emergency” is defined as an employee's unanticipated need for dependent care in order to fulfill a work assignment. To use COC, you must first register with the program. There is no fee to register. NYU pays half the hourly cost for up to 50 hours per year for each employee who utilizes COC emergency care for a child or adult/elder. You are billed directly by COC for the other half. For purposes of this program, adult/elder is defined as the employee's parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, spouse, or registered domestic partner, providing that person spends at least 8 hours per day in the employee's home and/or the employee is responsible for the person. Entertainment and Recreation

You will find opportunities to attend film screenings, dramatic and musical performances, and other special events throughout the year on campus. Additionally, discount tickets to events outside of NYU may be available. Here are some of the best ways to find out what is happening:

News and Educational Programs

  • NYU Today is published bi-weekly during the academic year and presents news and features about the NYU community, including a listing of events around campus. Look for NYU Today at locations throughout campus.
  • The Professional Development and Work-Life/Wellness Education Program Guide is published throughout the year and offers a schedule of programs sponsored by the Offices of Learning and Development and Employee Relations. Check your mail go to the online version of the guide.
  • You will find information about employee programs and news about your benefits in Working at NYU, a newsletter for staff and faculty. The Employee Relations office publishes the newsletter regularly throughout the academic year and distributes it through campus mail.

The Ticket Central Box Office is the University's resource for discount tickets. Anyone with a valid student, employee, or alumni ID is eligible to use Ticket Central and take advantage of reduced prices for a wide range of events. Call or stop by for a current listing of what is available, including:

  • tickets to NYU Events
  • discount movie tickets for Sony Loews Theatres, Cineplex Odeon, United Artists, and City Cinemas
  • tickets for concerts, Broadway and Off-Broadway theatre, opera, dance, and sporting events—often at discounted rates

Ticket Central collaborates with the Theater Development Fund (TDF), and offers vouchers for theatrical, dance, and music events throughout NYC. For a current listing of TDF events, visit www.tdf.org.

The Employee Relations Office administers special events, such as the University's annual ice-skating party, family day outing, longer service events, and offers half-price baseball tickets for employees and their guests. Coles facilities include:

  • a 1/6-mile, three-lane, rooftop running track
  • six rooftop tennis courts
  • a natatorium with an NCAA regulation swimming pool and diving tank

  • a large, modern weight-training room plus two annexes with free weights and weight machines
  • individual rooms for wrestling/judo, fencing, physical fitness/calisthenics, dance, and exercise prescription instruction

Admission to most home athletic events is free to all employees and their families. Information on intercollegiate athletic events can be found on posters throughout the University, through Ticket Central, or in advertisements in campus papers. Bobst houses a wealth of resources. BobCat, the computerized card catalog puts the library's collections and many other resources at your fingertips. You can also visit www.nyu.edu/library to find out more about the resources available at Bobst, or pick up the Self-Guided Tour or other guides available at the Bobst Information Desk. Anyone with a valid NYU Card may use the library.

NYU Book Stores

The NYU Book Stores are comprised of four stores to serve the NYU Community. Store revenue is returned to the University to help support school programs and initiatives.

Employee Discount: Show your NYU identification card at the cash register before making your purchase to receive a 15% discount on most items. The discount does not apply to sale items, some special purchases, to computer hardware and software at the NYU Computer Store, or at the Health Sciences Bookstore. Many software packages are educationally priced.

The Main Bookstore supplies course materials for Tisch School of the Arts, Stern School of Business (undergraduate), College of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Steinhardt School of Education, School of Continuing and Professional Studies, Ehrenkranz School of Social Work, and Gallatin. The Professional Bookstore serves the Leonard N. Stern School of Business (Graduate), the School of Law, and the Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service.

The Book Centers carry a large selection of academic and university press titles, hardcover and paperback books, and can special order any book in print at no additional cost. There is also a selection of office stationery, supplies, gifts, and NYU sportswear.

The Torch Club is a private club located at New York University. Torch Club membership is automatic and includes all NYU faculty, administration, staff, and alumni. Your employee identification card or alumni identification card entitles you and your guests to the use of the Torch Club.

Saving Money and Discount Programs

Discount programs may be modified at any time.

NYU Deferred Payment Plan Computer Purchase Program

The NYU Computer Store offers full-time faculty, administrators, and researchers the opportunity to purchase computers, software and peripherals on a deferred-payment basis. The deferment will be interest-free and repaid through payroll deductions over a maximum two year period. Learn more about the Deferred Payment Plan.

The NYU Credit Union, 14 Washington Place, (212) 995-3171—The Credit Union is a federally-insured nonprofit cooperative that serves members by providing low-cost services and higher interest rates on savings. You may contribute to your credit union accounts through payroll deductions. Services provided include share draft (checking) accounts, money market accounts, IRAs, vacation and Christmas clubs, loans (including home equity and debt consolidation), and a VISA credit card.

NYU Buying Club—You may obtain free membership in The Buyer's Edge through the University. Through this program, you can purchase major items, such as appliances, automobiles, and furniture, at the lowest advertised price. For more information, go to www.buyersedgeinc.com (user ID: 504, password: member1).

NYU New York Times Discount Program—All students, faculty, and staff are eligible to receive the NY Times at a discounted price of around 60% off. Regular 7 day a week subscriptions are $10.20; NYU: $4.40. Regular 5 day a week subscriptions are $5.30; NYU: $2.00.

In order to receive your discount as a student or faculty member, please visit this website. In order to begin receiving a discount on a subscription that already exists, or if you are a staff member, call 1-888-698-2655. If you need to order NYU discounted subscriptions in bulk, call 1-800-631-1222.

U.S. Savings Bonds—You can purchase U.S. Savings Bonds through regular payroll deductions. Applications are available from the Payroll Department, (212) 998-2920.

Car Rental Discounts—NYU employees can receive discounted rates on car rentals for business or personal use through Avis. For more information, call the NYU Purchasing Department at (212) 998-1030.

To obtain a discount on Avis car rentals you must use an Avis-honored charge card (most major credit cards), show your NYU identification card, and provide the NYU/Avis discount number: B686400. The NYU corporate rate provides accident liability insurance, property damage coverage, and accidental collision damage coverage both for business and personal use (not offered for promotional rates). For reservations, call (800) 331-1212.

Neighborhood Businesses—Many of the stores, theaters, and restaurants near NYU offer discounts to staff who present NYU identification cards. When frequenting neighborhood merchants, ask if they offer an NYU discount.
