Taking a Sabbatical or a Leave

Unpaid Leave of Absence

Here is how your benefits are affected during an unpaid leave of absence:

Retirement Plan: All employee and University contributions are suspended during your leave and resume when you return to work.

Insurance: NYU continues to pay its share of your health, dental, long-term disability, and group life insurance premiums during a University-approved leave of absence. NYU will bill you for the premiums you normally pay through payroll deductions. If you pay the bill, coverage will continue. Since you are not being paid, your health plan contribution rate will be based on the charge for the lowest salary bracket. Long-term disability coverage can continue for up to 12 months.

Employee Spending Account: Automatic tax-free ESA contributions cease unless you elect to continue to make contributions on an after-tax basis. You cannot make claims for expenses against your Health Care ESA incurred during the leave unless you elect to make contributions on an after-tax basis. You may continue to reimburse yourself from the amount already in your Dependent Care ESA. You may change or revoke your original ESA election for Health or Dependent care within 31 days of beginning or ending an unpaid leave.

Social Security: Because you are not paid any salary, no Social Security taxes are paid.

Tuition Remission: Your individual tuition remission is suspended during your leave and resumes when you return to work. Tuition remission for your spouse and dependent children continues during a University-approved leave of absence.

Sabbatical

Faculty in code 102 are eligible to continue certain benefits while on paid sabbatical. Here is how your benefits are affected:

Retirement Plan: The University continues to make its 10% contribution on your sabbatical pay. You continue to contribute the percentage you have selected on your sabbatical pay.

Insurance: NYU will continue its contributions to your health, dental, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage during your sabbatical. If you currently have coverage that requires payroll deductions, the deductions will continue to be taken. Health benefit deductions will be based on the salary bracket in which your monthly sabbatical pay places you.

Employee Spending Accounts: Contributions to your ESA will continue to be deducted from your pay.

Social Security: Social Security taxes will continue to be paid for you while you are on sabbatical, based on your reduced salary.

Tuition Remission: Eligibility is the same as before your sabbatical.
