Administrative and Professional Handbook
If You Become Disabled
Social Security Disability Insurance
If you are totally and permanently disabled for more than six consecutive months,
you may also be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits. Contact your
local Social Security Office as soon as you learn you may be totally disabled
for more than six months.
Retirement Plan
If you are receiving monthly income from the TIAA Group Total Disability Plan,
NYU will also contribute monthly to your NYU Retirement Plan account. See the
NYU Retirement Plan Summary Plan Description for details.
Health and Life Insurance Coverage
If you have completed 10 or more years of full-time continuous NYU employment
and are receiving Group Total Disability benefits through TIAA, you are eligible
to continue your NYU group health and life insurance coverage by enrolling in
the NYU Retiree Medical Plan and electing to continue health and life insurance
as a retiree of the University. See Benefits
Available to You in Retirement.
If you have less than 10 years of NYU employment, you may be eligible to continue
NYU group health and life insurance coverage for a limited period of time paying
the full group rate premium.
In either case, consult the Benefits Office for details.
Tuition Remission
Whether or not your tuition remission benefit continues depends on the length
of your continuous full-time NYU employment before you became disabled.
- Less than 5 years—your individual entitlement ceases. Your spouse/registered
domestic partner and children may complete the degree program in
which they were enrolled at the time of disability.
- Five or more years—your individual entitlement is the same as before disability.
Children under college age at the time of disability will be eligible for
four years of tuition remission toward completion of a bachelor’s degree when
they reach college age. Your spouse/registered domestic partner and
children may complete the degree program in which they were enrolled at the
time of disability.
- Ten or more years—see Tuition
Remission in Benefits Available to You in Retirement.
