Promotion and Transfer

Opportunities at NYU

It is NYU’s policy to encourage promotion from within. To learn more about employment opportunities at the University, visit the Apply For Jobs area of this Web site for a complete list of current openings.

Promotion

A promotion is a move from your current position into a different position in a higher salary grade.

Transfer

A transfer is a move to any other job in another department. A transfer can be to a higher grade level (a promotional transfer) or at the same level (a lateral move). It can be advantageous to take a lateral transfer if you want to change your work environment or do another type of work.

When You May Apply

Once you establish a good performance record, you may seek a transfer to another job. You may apply for another job within your own office or department at any time. Speak with your supervisor or Human
Resources Officer.

If you wish to apply for a transfer (promotional or lateral) outside of your work unit, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You must have completed at least eight months of employment in your present job.
  • If you transferred to another office or department previously, you must have been in your new position for at least one year.

The Transfer Process

If there is a job for which you wish to be considered, you may file a Transfer Application with the Employment Office. Interviews will be arranged with candidates whose skills and experience appear to most closely meet the prospective department’s needs.
Your current job will not be jeopardized as a result of applying for a transfer. Your request for transfer and the initial interview with the prospective department will be held in strictest confidence, if you request.

If there is mutual interest after the initial interview, the prospective supervisor must contact your current supervisor for a performance reference before you may be offered the job. The HR Officer for the hiring unit must contact your HR Officer for a performance reference, as well.

If you accept the job offer, you are required to give one month’s notice to the person to whom you currently report. The gaining and losing departments may negotiate a shorter or longer notice period.

Your new department will assume responsibility for all vacation and sick days you have not used.
