Administrative and Professional Handbook

Getting Started at NYU

Your Probationary Period

Administrative and professional employees below the level of director or equivalent, must complete a six month probationary period. During this time, the person to whom you report appraises your ability to learn and perform your job duties. Shortly before your probationary period is over, the person to whom you report completes a Probationary Review Form. This is a written evaluation of your performance to date and a determination as to whether or not your employment should continue. Both you and the person to whom you report will sign the form, which will become part of your permanent record.

Get Your NYUCard

  • Your HR Officer or departmental administrator will provide you with an NYUCard Authorization Form allowing you to obtain your NYUCard at the NYUCard facility, located at 7 East 12th Street, 1st floor.
  • You must carry your NYUCard with you at all times, and will need it to gain entrance to University buildings and when cashing personal checks at NYU.
  • Check the back of your card for important numbers and other useful information, including your University ID number.
  • If you misplace your card, contact your HR Officer or departmental administrator for a new NYUCard Authorization form. There is a $15.00 charge for lost or stolen cards, unless there is an NYPD incident report for a stolen card (in which case there will be no charge).
  • For additional information about the NYUCard and to download the NYUCard Authorization Form, click here

Activate Your NetID and Log Into NYUHome

  • Your unique NetID (Network IDentification), helps ensure that you are properly authenticated when accessing NYU's networked computer resources, including NYUHome, a customizable portal that provides access to e-mail and many web-based services and tools.
  • Activate your NetID at any time, from any Internet-connected computer, by going to the ITS Start page at http://start.nyu.edu. Enter your NetID, which may be printed on your NYUCard. (If you do not know your NetID, follow the instructions on the ITS Start page for determining what it is.) Next, follow the activation instructions on the ITS Start page, and create your password and password hint. Activating your NetID will also automatically activate your NYUHome service.
  • You can access NYUHome from any Internet-connected computer. Go to http://home.nyu.edu and enter your activated NetID and password to log in. Explore the various channels and tabs within NYUHome. Access your NYU e-mail from the main page; select Preferences to customize your NYUHome screen, your e-mail spam filter, and your e-mail address.
  • Your default NYU e-mail address is in the format yourNetID@nyu.edu. However, NYU administrators, faculty and staff are encouraged to use the following "business card" format: yourfirstname.yourlastname@nyu.edu. You can create this type of address for yourself from within your NYUHome Preferences (see above), or you can request it by sending e-mail to its.accounts@nyu.edu.
  • Once you have activated your NetID and NYUHome service, you can access a variety of ITS services in support of your work at NYU. For detailed descriptions and application instructions (where required), visit www.nyu.edu/its/faculty.html or www.nyu.edu/its/staff.html on the Information Technology Services (ITS) website.
  • To use NYU's IT resources, you must comply with NYU and ITS policies and standards; please be sure to review them at www.nyu.edu/its/policies/ and check periodically for updates.

Get Your Telephone, Voicemail, and Related Services

  • Your supervisor or department head will determine the set of services most appropriate for your work at NYU.
  • ITS provides faculty and staff members' office telephones, as well as voice mail, long distance authorization codes, and other telephony services. Normally, orders are placed by your departmental administrator through the school or division's telephone coordinator. For details, visit www.nyu.edu/its/telephone/ or call the ITS telecommunications service desk (1-212-998-1221).
