Learning & Development FAQs

How do I register for a program?
All registrations are completed online. To register for one of the Professional Development programs, please complete the registration form. If you do not have access to a computer, please contact us at 998-1280.

Do I need my boss's permission to take a program?
All Office and Technical staff should obtain their boss's permission to attend a program.

How do I cancel a class?
Please call 998-1280 as soon as you know you will not be attending a program. Many of our programs have waitlists, and if you cannot attend, someone else will be able to.

Are there charges for professional development programs?
There are no fees associated with professional development programs. The technology courses offered jointly by the Human Resources Division and the School of Continuing and Professional Studies do have fees and are tuition remission eligible.

l am on a waitlist. What does that mean?
Some of our classes are limited to ensure that participant-instructor interaction and learning opportunities are enhanced. Any registrations received over the maximum available seats are placed on a waitlist. If someone cancels his or her registration, the next person on the waitlist is called and offered the spot.

What is the procedure for signing up for a technology course with SCPS?
Complete the appropriate Tuition Remission form, obtain the required signatures, and register in person at 145 Fourth Avenue, 2nd floor. For more information, call the SCPS Registration Office at 998-7150.

If I take a certain number of classes, does it guarantee me a future promotion or pay raise?
Participating in professional development programs does not guarantee a promotion or raise. However, by improving your skills and abilities, you will be more marketable.

Will you offer one of your programs just for my department?
When the need arises to have training within a particular department, the Office of Learning and Organizational Development can develop a program to meet your area's specific needs. Through meetings with Human Resource Officers, department supervisors, and potential participants, we can gain an understanding of the department which we apply to the program. Exercises and discussions are targeted to the particular challenges facing the department. Customized programs can be conducted at your location or in our training room and require a minimum of 10 participants. If you would like to learn more about customized training, please contact Crystal Scott at 998-1280.

Who do I call with questions?
You can call the Office of Learning & Development at 998-1280.
