Your Initial Weeks and Months of Employment
Within Your First Week:
1. Ask to meet with your supervisor: Set up a time to meet with your supervisor
to review and discuss:
- Your job description and expected work schedule
- Your department's goals and mission
- Performance goals and expectations
- Training needed and key people to meet
- New Employee Health and Safety Orientation
- Professional ethics and confidentiality practices, if applicable
2. Orient yourself to your department: Seek out information to learn more about
your department (goals, missions, organizational structure, administrative and
operations procedures, manuals, protocols) by initiating conversations with your supervisor, colleagues,
HR Officer and review any orientation materials provided in your area.
3. Computer Access - NYUHome Stations: Need to sign up for benefits, review HR or University policies, or
check your NYUHome email? If you don't have access to a computer at home or need access while on campus and it is not available in your office, you can find NYUHome Stations around the University.

Benefits Within Your First Month:
- You will receive a welcome email from the Benefits Office with instructions on how to enroll in your benefits.
- You must enroll in benefits promptly to make sure that your coverage begins as soon as you are eligible. If you miss the enrollment deadline, you will be automatically enrolled in a single coverage medical plan. Your next opportunity to change coverage will be if you have a Qualifying Status Change event, or in the next open enrollment period for the next calendar year.
During Your First Six Months To One Year:
- Regularly meet with your supervisor to set goals, review your performance and continue to seek his/her feedback
- Identify learning and professional development opportunities. You will want to discuss with your supervisor what the appropriate opportunities may be.
- Get involved with the community: Talk to your supervisors and colleagues about campus groups, publications and other professional activities and resources that are available that might be of interest to you. You can also check out the NYU Community Service website at www.nyu.edu/community.service
