Advancing Your Career at NYU

There are two basic ways to advance your career at NYU; one way is to seek a promotion in your current department, the other is by seeking a new position through a transfer to another part of the University.

If you want to increase your chances for promotion within your current department, be sure to let your supervisor know that you are ready to take on additional responsibilities and learn new skills. As you discuss your interest in advancement with your supervisor, she or he may be able to help you focus on your long term career goals, and direct you to resources that will help you to build your career.

The Transfer Process

POLICY:
The University requires that new employees stay in their present job for at least eight months of service before applying for a transfer. Employees who do successfully transfer must stay within the new position for at least one year before requesting a second transfer. Applications for all positions are accepted as long as the position remains vacant.

  • With New York University's automated application system, PeopleAdmin, the process for applying for jobs is fast and efficient. All you need is access to the internet. Go to Job Seekers, and click on "Apply for Jobs" where you will be able to scroll through all current job opportunities. From there, you can select which job(s) you are interested in applying for. Please note that the list of job opportunities is the same for employees as for external applicants, but there is a different application to complete.
  • We do not accept faxed or e-mailed resumes.
  • If you know someone who does not have access to the internet, please let them know they can stop by NYU's Talent Management Office, located at 7 East 12th Street, 1st floor, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applicants do not need to make an appointment. Three computer kiosk stations are available for use with instructions on how to apply online. Employees can use any of the kiosk stations indicated on the PeopleAdmin transfer application process instructions document or check with your HR Rep for other locations.
  • If you have access to a word processing application (note: the three Employment kiosks do), you have the opportunity to "cut and paste" your resume and cover letter or upload your resume into the system, in addition to answering a series of questions (Transfer Application).
  • Once you have completed the application, you will receive a confirmation message. This verifies your application is now in the PeopleAdmin system.
  • Please note that your application can only be viewed by the Employment Office and the unit with the job vacancy. However, if you indicate in your application that you would like to be accessible in the general applicant database, then your application can be viewed by all other unit HR Officers. The Talent Management Office or HR Officer will contact you directly if a suitable position becomes available in the future.
  • You do not need to re-submit resume or cover letter, unless you are making changes and wish to do so. In addition, as indicated for some of the questions on the Transfer Application, you can indicate "same" if that information has not changed.
  • Should you encounter difficulty in accessing the PeopleAdmin system or should you require any further assistance, please contact our office at 212-998-1250.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR CODE 104/106/107 EMPLOYEES:

  • For 106 positions: You may also be requested to come to Talent Management Office for skills testing, if relevant for the position, if current test scores are not on file.
  • The Employment staff will conduct daily searches of the applicant database to retrieve transfer applications. A member of the Talent Management Office staff will contact you within one business day of receipt of application. The unit with the job opening can view your application, but will not contact you until the Employment Office Representative has reviewed your application, has determined you have met minimum qualifications for the position, has a current Transfer Evaluation on file, and has updated skills testing results, if applicable. If the Representative has this information, he/she will e-mail HR Officer for respective unit letting them know they can contact you for an interview. You will be asked to sign application at time of interview, whether the interview is with Employment or the hiring unit.
  • Based on your qualifications for the position(s) you have applied for, the Employment Office Representative will interoffice mail to you a printout of your application and indicate on bottom that the application has been or has not been forwarded to the department.
  • You will be notified by the hiring unit or Talent Management when the position is filled.

Notice to Office and Technical Employees Covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement with Local 3882 (codes 106/104)

Notice of all permanent bargaining unit job vacancies shall be posted for five working days before the job is filled on a permanent basis and will include job title, grade, location, and a brief description of the job duties including qualifications and necessary skills. Employees who make application during this five-day period and are qualified will be interviewed for the vacancy first, but the University may then consider candidates from outside the bargaining unit or the University as well. A transfer application must be received in the Talent Management Office of the Human Resources Division by the close of business on the fifth working day after the notice has been posted including the date the notice is posted. Employees who make application during this five-day period will be responded to in writing by the Talent Management Office by the end of the following week. This response will include that the application for transfer has been received by the Talent Management Office and that either

1) The application has been forwarded to the appropriate department.

2) The applicant is not qualified for the position for which s/he has applied and the application will not be forwarded. Applicants for a position will be notified when the Talent Management Office receives notice that the position is filled.
