The DAA Selection Committee will consider many characteristics to determine the winners but following criteria will be used extensively. Each nominee should excel in one or more of the following areas:

  • Operational Excellence
Significant changes, modifications or approaches that enhances work productivity, efficiency and quality
  • Exceptional Service

Selection Process

Nominations are sought from faculty, administrators, staff, and students in each school and major division. The nomination committees for each area then recommend to the provost, deans, or senior vice presidents candidates, from among the nominees, to forward to the university’s DAA Selection Committee for final selection.

To Submit a Nomination

School/Administrative Unit Committees

The provost, the dean of each school, and the senior vice president of each administrative unit may form a nomination committee that comprises various constituencies within their areas. Faculty presence on the nomination committee is recommended.

Selection Process and Nomination Form

Faculty, administrators, staff, and students are invited to submit nominations with justification according to the criteria. The nomination committee of each school/administrative division will then recommend to the provost, the dean, or senior vice president nominees to forward to the DAA Selection Committee, which makes the final selection of the awardees. Please note that only one nomination letter is needed for each DAA nominee from the respective Provost, Dean, or Sr. Vice President.

Approximately half of the administrative and professional staff works in the schools and half in the administration. Final nominees are solicited in that proportion. Each of the schools puts forward one final nominee, and the administrative divisions submit final nominees based on their divisional population. The breakdown for the number of nominee per school/administrative unit are as follows:

  • Schools: 1 nominee per school
  • President’s areas, Executive Vice President, and Chief of Staff: up to 2 nominees
  • General Counsel: 1 nominee
  • Provosts’(including Vice President – Student Affairs): up to 6 nominees
  • Senior Vice President for Finance and Budget: up to 2 nominees
  • Senior Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations: up to 1 nominee
  • Senior Vice President for University Relations and Public Affairs: up to 1 nominee

It is important that the nomination process be an open one. It must reach out to the departmental level and not limit its focus to those who, due to the nature of their jobs, are most visible to school/administrative division heads.

Candidates may be nominated across unit lines, e.g., someone from the Steinhardt School of Education may nominate someone from the Tisch School of the Arts, but the nomination form must be submitted to the nominee's Human Resources Officer.

University Recognition

The recipients of the Distinguished Administrator Award will be announced in the spring. The winners are invited to a special luncheon reception hosted by the President of NYU. The winners are also honored at an evening dinner celebration hosted by the Executive Vice-President of NYU where the award recipients are formally recognized. DAA winners receive a certificate of achievement and a monetary gift.

Local Recognition

An award recipient's school or administrative division may host an event to celebrate this honor or recognize DAA nominees. Awardees should also be featured in newsletters and/or other appropriate communications/publications of the school/administrative unit.

Submission Of Nomination to the University DAA Selection Committee

The Human Resources Officer in each school/unit submits the final nominees to the university DAA Selection Committee for consideration. Each school/administrative unit may also submit to the committee any its criteria and procedures for selecting a nominee.

We ask that each school/administrative division keep its final nominees confidential until the selection is completed.
