Application Process

Request Room Suitemates

Roommate requests cannot be guaranteed.

Up to three roommates may be requested by each applicant. Coed roommate requests will not be accepted.

To increase the possibility of being assigned together, it is important that all roommates request the same arrival dates and assignment preferences on their application.  In addition, each must submit their application in the same manner (online or paper application) following the instructions outlined below.

Instructions for applicants requesting roommates and applying online:

Applicants applying online must initiate the online application process within 30 minutes of the roommate(s) they are requesting to live with.

Please note that once the process is initiated, the dates of completion may vary for each applicant in a roommate grouping.  This may occur for a few reasons, such as the time needed to generate an NYU identification number or due to different payment methods used by applicants (online applications paid by bank check or money order are not considered complete until payment is received by mail).

Summer Housing will make a reasonable effort to accommodate these requests even if the dates of completion vary by applicants within an online roommate grouping. Please note that if dates of completion vary by applicants requesting to live with each other, the applications will be processed based on the date the final application in the grouping is submitted.

Instructions for applicants requesting roommates and applying with the printed application form:

Applicants submitting the printed application form by mail or by fax must submit their requested roommate applications in the same envelope or in the same fax transmission, preferably with a cover letter.

Please note the following important information about roommate requests:
  • An incomplete application will be held pending correction of the problem and will be separated from other applications it has been grouped with.  For example, if two people submit applications requesting to live with each other, and one of the applications is not complete, this application will be separated from the complete application.
  • If space becomes limited and not all roommates are enrolled for summer courses, roommate applications may be separated with applications from enrolled applicants processed before non-enrolled applicants.
  • Please note that rooms are assigned shortly before a resident's arrival.  If you are assigned to the same building as your requested roommate(s), this does not mean you have been assigned together.
  • Due to variation in room size and occupancy, it is possible that requested roommates may be assigned to the same suite, but not to the same bedroom as each other.
  • Although Summer Housing endeavors to accommodate roommate requests, roommate requests cannot be guaranteed.
