We are pleased to announce that in the University's ongoing effort to enhance the NYU residential living experience, we have purchased a new, beautifully-appointed building located at 316 Third Ave. (23rd Street and ThirdAve.). Known as Gramercy Green, this new acquisition was already designed and under construction as a high-end rental apartment building when the university became aware of its availability for purchase.
The area in which Gramercy Green is located draws upon its connection with numerous historic landmarks nearby, including the Beaux Arts Appellate Courthouse, the Flatiron Building, the MetLife Clock Tower, the New York Life Building, and the Empire State Building.
The Greenmarket at Union Square is the favorite local shopping destination for the Gramercy residents, who welcomed the new arrival of Whole Foods. Stores of all descriptions can be found on Park Avenue South, and there is an expansive choice of restaurants in the area.
Gramercy Park is the Anglicized version of the original Dutch "Krom Moerasje," meaning "crooked little swamp", which indeed it once was. Samuel Bulkley Ruggles bought the land, drained it, and in 1831 laid out the streets around the park, which were meant to mimic a London square.
