No Changes Permitted Once a Lottery Card is Submitted
Students should carefully research their roommate choices before submitting their lottery card. Once a card has been submitted changes will not be permitted.
Lottery priority
Participation in a Department of Residential Education "Special Interest Housing" program is given top placement priority and those students will not participate in the lottery.
The placement priority established for lottery is sophomores first, then seniors followed by juniors. This priority will greatly influence the buildings that may be available to you during the Phase III hall/room selection.
Students may not change their priority based upon credits earned. For example a student who entered housing as a freshman and has been in housing for 4 semesters but is short credits giving them junior status may not be re-classified as a sophomore (or first priority).
Priority does not guarantee placement in any specific hall or room. Students should be aware they may not receive their top building choices.

Students May only Submit One Lottery Card
Student’s cannot submit multiple lottery cards. Once a student's name has been submitted on a lottery card, whether submitted as an individual or as part of a group, it cannot appear on another card.
Group Lottery Card Information
A group is defined as any card being submitted with 2 to 6 names. Students who wish to submit a lottery card as a group must know the following information:
- Group lottery card members will submit one group card only. Up to 6 students of the same legal sex or gender identity can submit their names together on one card.
- Students submitting as a group should gather together to submit the card or designate one person from the group to collect the necessary University NetID's and reapplication confirmation numbers required for submission.
- Only one person within the group may submit the lottery card. The card submitter becomes the designated CARD CAPTAIN (see specific information below) and will be the person responsible for selecting the hall/room for the group in Phase III of the lottery process.
- Students who wish to lottery with students with a different priority status than their own will have an averaged rating. Therefore, a priority 1 student and a priority 3 student choosing to live together will enter the lottery with a priority 2 lottery card standing. All lottery card priority numbers will be between 1 and 3.
- Students cannot be added or removed from a group lottery card once it has been submitted.
Card Captain
The CARD CAPTAIN is the person who submits the lottery card on behalf of a group. The CARD CAPTAIN will be the person ultimately responsible for selecting the hall/room for the group in Phase III of the lottery process.
The CARD CAPTAIN is automatically assigned to the student who submits the card through their NYUHome account. Before submitting the lottery card, groups should discuss whom they wish to assume the responsibility of being the card captain.
Changes cannot be made to the card captain once the lottery card has been submitted. Do not select as your card captain someone who may be going abroad or who may accept a position as a Residential Education staff member.
If You Do not Submit a Lottery Card
If you do not submit a lottery card, an administrative assignment will be made for you in August 2008 by the housing office. Failure to submit a lottery card will not cancel your Housing License.
