(slides 38, 39, 40) The significance of the influence of the Almovarids and Almohads is reflected in the architecture of the period in two main aspects: a strict sense of religiosity and a cultural linkage with North Africa. Both the Almovarid and Almohad dynasties were strict in their religious and social policies. They undertook a large program of public mosque building; and their mosques were more simple and austere structures. The mosques built in North Africa in this period (as seen in slides 38 and 40) were generally quite sober, lacking the intricacies of Andalusian architecture from earlier periods (such as the Aljaferia depicted in slide 39).
