(slides 35, 36) Ivory containers were a form of luxury object produced by Muslims that were especially popular amongst Christians. During the period of unrest that followed the fall of the Caliphate in 1031 A. D., some of the luxury objects of the Muslim nobility came into the possession of Christians. Ivory objects were still greatly appreciated because of their costliness and rarity. Here, we see two examples of ivory objects that came to be owned and used by Christians. Slide 35 shows the Braga pyxis that came to be used as a liturgical chalice. Slide 36 shows the Palencia casket. It must have become a Christian possession not long after it was first made. In order to be used as a container for relics, it was outfitted with enamel and bronze fittings. Images of saints were added to both ends. Back to slides |
