(slides 32, 33, 34) Luxury items produced by Arabs or Muslims were sometimes owned by Christians. Some Christian church authorities considered this problematic, though it is unclear whether this was because the items were made by Muslims or because the luxurious nature of the items. These images depict examples of such objects. The box (slide 32) and perfume container (slide 34) were made in a similar manner. They are made of silver, with similar ornaments and inscriptions. The perfume container is of much finer artistry. Traces of gold can still be depicted on the perfume container. Slide 33 shows a page from a Christian book. The medallion depicted here resembles the metalwork produced by Muslim artisans. It is similar to the medallions drawn in Qurans of the period, demarcating the divisions between verses. These objects show the cultural interaction between Christians and Muslims in Andalusia. Not only did some Christians come to own luxury objects produced by Muslims, but Christian decoration came to be influenced by Muslim styles. Back to slides |
