FINANCIAL AID
Graduate Fellowships and assistantships are
awarded
by the Graduate School and the Center. MacCracken Fellowships are
multi-year fellowships that include full tuition and a stipend for
two years. Graduate Assistantships are awarded for one year and
may be renewed for a second year; they also include tuition and
a stipend. Both types of financial aid are awarded competitively
on the basis of academic merit. The application for both types of
aid is the application for admission to GSAS.
Information about fellowships may be obtained from the GSAS wesite
at http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.financialaid.html
FLAS FELLOWSHIPS
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships
offering full-time tuition and a stipend for living expenses
are awarded on a competitive basis to full-time students at NYU.
The Hagop Kevorkian Center administers the FLAS fellowship program
under its authorization as a Title VI Middle East National Resource
Center by the U. S. Department of Education.
To be eligible for FLAS, an applicant must be a U.S.
citizen or permanent resident and must plan to enroll full-time
in a degree program that will include study either of Arabic, Hebrew,
Persian, Turkish or Urdu. Students in the MA Program in Near Eastern Studies
and all joint programs are eligible to apply, as are students in
a number of departments in the Graduate School of Arts and Science
and in graduate programs at other schools at NYU.
Competitive priorities for Academic Year and Summer
FLAS include 1) applicants who will achieve Advanced level proficiency
before graduation and 2) master’s level applicants who plan
to pursue careers in public service.
Academic Year FLAS Fellowships may be awarded to both
incoming and continuing students. Unlike most other financial aid
at GSAS, application for FLAS is separate from the admissions application.
Applications are due in January for study beginning
the following fall; application forms are available in November.
Summer FLAS fellowships are available to students
currently enrolled at NYU to attend selected intensive language
programs in the US and abroad. Applications for summer FLAS are
also available in November and are due in January, for study in
the following summer term.
NYU doctoral students who have completed all coursework
may apply for Research Abroad fellowships that cover the fall and
spring semesters. The awards support extended research projects
in the Middle East that incorporate language acquisition equivalent
to one year of intensive study. The fellowship covers maintenance
of matriculation and a stipend to cover living expenses.
Applications are due in January for study beginning the following
fall; application forms are available in November.
