Admissions Information

I. General information/Application

Applicants for the M.A. program should have a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in the humanities or social sciences from an accredited college or university, and they should have graduated with at least a B (3.0) cumulative average. In most cases, averages of 3.5 and above are needed for applicants to be competitive for merit based financial aid.

The program only accepts applications for Fall.

The Graduate School strongly prefers that applicants use the online application rather than the paper application. The application and detailed admissions and financial aid information is available at http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/gradHome

The CLACS Department and Field of Study application codes are:
CLACS MA (32 points) - LATC, CLC
joint MA CLACS/Journalism (46 points) - JLAC, JOC
CLACS/Museum Studies concetration (36 points) - LATC, MUA
CLACS/Museum Studies Certificate (48 points) - LATC, MUC
Dual degree CLACS/Law (94 points) - LCSL, LCS

II. Admissions Tests

All students are required to take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE). Students may apply to the program before taking the GRE exam but will not be allowed to begin taking classes until official GRE scores are received at NYU. The GSAS institutional code list is R2596.

All international students are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test and obtain a minimum score of 570 (paper) or 230 (computer). Students will not be admitted to the program until official TOEFL scores are received at NYU. The GSAS institutional code list is 2596.

Information on both tests can be found at www.ets.org

III. Second language proficiency

Students should also have a working knowledge of Spanish, French, or Portuguese. In some cases, provisional acceptance is given pending the student's achieving this needed language competency, which will be required for graduation. However, credit toward the degree is not given for language study.

Please note that meeting the minimum admissions requirements does not guarantee admittance the program.

IV. Financial Aid/Costs

Applicants requesting financial aid must have all materials in by January 4. The deadline for Fall admission without financial aid is April 15.

CLACS has limited financial aid opportunities for entering and continuing students. Please go to the Fellowships page for more information. All MA students who secure external fellowships or awards may be eligible for GSAS' Tuition Incentive Program (TIP), which encourages students to apply for external assistance and provides tuition support to recipients of external awards. Students receiving external awards of $13,000 or more from recognized, academic sources of funding outside of the University can apply for matching tuition points up to the amount of their outside award. Students receiving external awards of less than $13,000 may apply for matching tuition points up to 50 percent of the amount of the external award. Applications and specific details about TIP eligibility criteria can be obtained here.
