Alexander Ness
is a third-year composition student in NYU's doctoral program. He is
interested in music technology, both in the sense of audio gadgetry
(computers for live processing and algorithmic composition; recorders
for sampling; circuits for bending) and in the wider sense of musical
tools and techniques (harmony, counterpoint, notation, sensory
metaphor). His recent compositions include:
- "Shruti" for violist Amy Cimini
- "Cycles" for soprano Emily Eagen and members of the International
Contemporary Ensemble
- "Glass Drum" for cellist Ha-Yang Kim
- an arrangement of Frank Zappa's "G-Spot Tornedo" for the Walden
School Players
- "Three Tristans" for Glissando bin Laden and His Musichideen, a
noise-and-drone band in which he plays keyboards and laptop
