Maureen Mahon joins the Department of Music as a Visiting Associate Professor.  She received her B.S.
in Performance Studies from Northwestern University
(1987) and an M.A. (1993), M.Phil. (1994), and Ph.D.
(1997) in anthropology from NYU.  Previously, she taught at Wesleyan University and UCLA.

A cultural anthropologist, her research interests include contemporary African American culture, the production of identity, the construction and performance of race and gender in music, and the relationship between race, class, generation, and culture. She is the author of Right To Rock:  The Black Rock Coalition and the Cultural Politics of Race (Duke University Press, 2004) and articles on cultural producers. Her current research on the music and legacy of black women in rock examines the intersection of gender, race, sexuality, and music production.
