The New York University Department of Music (Faculty of Arts and Science) invites applications for an assistant (tenure-track) or associate (recently tenured) professor of music and sonic studies. The position will be effective September 1, 2008 pending budgetary and administrative approval. Rank will be commensurate with experience. A proven record of teaching excellence, scholarly innovation and productivity is expected. Ph.D. at the time of appointment is required.

The department seeks a scholar with substantial ethnographic experience; a firm theoretical grounding in the social sciences; a deep understanding of the humanities; and a demonstrated commitment to critically, methodologically, and theoretically bridging these areas. Specializations should engage sonic and linguistic dimensions of social life and communication, complementing current faculty interests in memory, ethnographies of conflict, diaspora, performance studies, and technology and new media.
