My academic background in the field of languages and literatures dates back to 1989, when I began my Master's degree in French Language and Literature at the University of Houston. From 1991 to 1996 I continued my graduate work at the University of Texas at Austin, pursuing my studies in both Persian and French. I was awarded a Ph.D. in French Literature in May, 1996.
Since 1994 I have concentrated on several Persian language and literature projects. The focus of my language projects has been the development of materials for different proficiency levels. These include textbooks for First- and Second-year Persian, three CD-ROMs for Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced levels of Persian, and a CD-ROM which introduces students of Persian to major aspects of Persian grammar. All these materials are now in use at a number of American universities.
On the literature front my focus is on contemporary Persian fiction. My first major work in this field was A Feast in the Mirror: Stories by Contemporary Iranian Women , which I co-edited and co-translated with Professor Shouleh Vatanabadi. This book won the Today's Librarian Award for best collection of short stories in translation in the year 2000. My other book, Another Sea, Another Shore: Persian Stories of Migration (co-edited and co-translated with Shouleh Vatanabadi) is a collection of a variety of voices, themes and issues, depicted in short stories by Iranian exiles and migrants.
In my own research I have focused mainly on literary characteristics of modern Persian fiction. My latest work, Modern Reflections of Classical Traditions in Persian Fiction , is a monograph on some of the major characteristics of contemporary literary production and literary criticism in Iran. This book was published simultaneously in the United States (in English) and in Iran (in Persian). I am currently working on another book project which focuses on analyzing literary counter-discourses in contemporary Iran.
