Students are responsible for the material covered in the lectures and in-class films.
Reading Assignments: There will
be a reading assignment almost every week, often from Victoria
Fromkin, Robert Rodman, and Nina Hyams (2003), An Introduction to
Language, 7th ed. Boston: Heinle. (often referred to as FRH on
this site). This book will complement the class rather than being its
content. Written Assignments: Written
assignments involve both essay questions that are different from the
kind to be found on the exams and problem solving that is somewhat
similar to the exam questions. Both have their own function in the
learning process. Written assignments will be weekly and they will
usually be passed out in recitations and will be handed back there.
The assignments plus attendance and participation in recitation
sections will be worth 30% of the final grade. Assignments that are
careless, incomplete, or are obviously copied from someone else's do
not receive any credit, even if they are partly correct. Late
assignments will not be accepted. Grading:
The midterm is worth 30%, and the final 40% of the final grade. The final is cumulative.
There will be no make-up exams under any circumstances. You will receive a zero grade
for an exam missed without a written, valid excuse acceptable to the instructor. If you are
excused from the midterm, your course grade will be computed on the basis of your
homeworks and final.
