Regular attendance and participation will be crucial, since student's project will be a central component of this class.

Project: Each student will be given a transcript of the speech of a child towards the beginning of the semester, and will be asked to make various analyses on it as the semester progresses. By the end of the semester, a cumulative report will be due, and possibly a class presentation about the project. This project will be worth 50% of the grade.

Exam: There is a final (May, 8 at 4-5:50pm), which will account for 25% of the grade (there is no midterm). There will be no make-up exams under any circumstances. You will receive a zero grade for an exam missed without a written, valid excuse acceptable to the instructor.

Readings and Written Assignments : There will be homeworks and readings, roughly every two weeks, often alternating with work on the project. Assignments that are careless, incomplete, or are obviously copied from someone else's do not receive any credit, even if they are partly correct. Late assignments will not be accepted. Assignments are worth 25% of the grade.

There will relatively few homeworks assignments (probably in the range of 5 to 8). Each homework will be graded on a simple 4-point scale:

4: exemplary (bonus credit)
3: complete (full credit)
2: partial or incomplete (2/3 credit)
1: substandard (1/3 credit)
0: late or missing (no credit)

At the end of the semester, the homework grades will be averaged, with an average of "3" or higher giving you full credit. While in theory you can make up a missing homework by having three other assignments graded a "4", this is not recommended. An exemplary mark of "4" will not be a common thing. Homework deadlines are strict. If a problem or conflict arises, please make certain to discuss your situation with Michal *well in advance* of the deadline.
