LANYU

LANYU, Linguistics Association of NYU, is the Graduate Student Organization for the Linguistics Department at NYU. The main purpose of LANYU is to provide a forum for discussion of issues of relevance and concern to graduate students in linguistics. To that end, LANYU organizes and conducts activities that promote the well being of graduate students.

In the few years, LANYU has implemented several changes to enrich the lives of the graduate students, both academically and socially. The new Graduate Central Space of the department has become a center for graduate students in to study, relax, and interact and participate in activities that have already proved to enrich the professional lives of the students. Following is a listing of our regular activities that LANYU sponsors.

LANYU Lunch

Approximately every two weeks, the students (and whoever else wants to come) have lunch together in the graduate space of the department. Generally grads take this opportunity to catch up with other grads and relax, but when it is called for, different topics of concern to the graduate student population are also discussed.

LANYU Forum

The LANYU Forum is a new program that is intended to give graduate students an opportunity to present research in a relaxed peer environment, and to hold workshops that help hone skills necessary for the field, such as, writing abstracts, conference presentation, etc.

LANYU also has regular meetings to discuss issues such as new departmental policies, new faculty, issues of advisement and course of study, grants and scholarships available, and upcoming events in linguistics (talks, colloquia, conferences, etc.).
