Admission Procedures and Financial Aid

Information about admissions to NYU may be obtained from the GSAS admissions page. Applicants for admission must submit an application form, undergraduate transcripts (and graduate transcripts, when applicable), letters of recommendation, a writing sample, GRE scores, and TOEFL scores for those students whose native language is not English.

Applications for admission may be submitted online by using the link:

http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/online

This online application procedure allows you to fill out and submit the application form online. You can can also submit your personal statement, writing samples, and resumé. As part of the online application you will be able to register your recommenders with the Embark online recommendation service. If your recommenders then submit their letters through this service, we will receive them as part of the online application.

Graduate applications should be submitted online if at all possible. If the applicant does not have access to appropriate internet facilities for an extended period of time, he or she must allow enough time for a paper application to arrive by the deadline. If you cannot apply online, you can obtain application forms either by downloading them from the GSAS application page, or requesting them to be sent to you by regular mail from GSAS.

The only credentials that MUST be mailed separately are academic transcripts, and any submissions that are not word-processed documents (e.g. videotapes, artwork, photocopies of articles). Recommenders may also send letters by email or regular mail. Please ensure that your name and any other necessary identifying information appear on or accompany any such materials that are sent in by regular mail, so that they can be matched up with your online application.

Any application material that is sent by mail for delivery by the US Postal Service (including regular mail, priority and express mail) should be addressed to:

    New York University
Graduate School of Arts and Science
    Graduate Enrollment Services
    P.O. Box 907
    New York, NY 10276-0907
    USA

Application materials sent by private express delivery services, such as UPS, FedEx, DHL, or materials delivered by hand, should be sent to:

    New York University
Graduate School of Arts and Science
    Graduate Enrollment Services
    One-half Fifth Ave.
    New York, NY 10003
    USA

The writing sample might be a term paper, a senior essay, a thesis, or a publication. Its role is to give the departmental admissions committee a first-hand impression of the applicant's academic preparation and potential to do creative research in linguistics as conducted in this particular department. If your academic background is not in linguistics, please send a writing sample that you believe best illustrates your potential to successfully pursue a graduate degree in this department. Your writing sample should be no longer than 50 double-spaced pages (or equivelent). The writing sample may be submitted online by simply uploading it into the online application, provided that it is in a standard word-processing format.

It is recommended that all application materials be received by December 18th. The final date by which the application must be received by the Graduate School is January 4. Please remember that all documents in support of your application, including transcripts and letters of recommendation, must be RECEIVED by 5pm eastern time on the deadline date.

All students in the M.A./Ph.D. program receive five years of guaranteed financial aid (Henry M. MacCracken Fellowships), possibly followed by a Dissertation Fellowship. A MacCracken Fellow receives a stipend, a tuition scholarship, remission of registration and service fees, a subsidy of the mandatory NYU health insurance costs, and has an obligation to teach at most four semesters. The number of fellowships at our disposal is limited; thus these awards are very competitive.

The applications of prospective students who come with fellowships awarded by external (governmental or private) granting agencies are judged by the same standards as others. If you are, or expect to be, the recipient of such an external fellowship, please get in touch with the Director of Graduate Studies to find out how your fellowship combines with the MacCracken program, as soon as possible after the submission of your application.

International applicants may obtain further information on TOEFL score requirements, international transcripts and other issues related to applying from outside the US, from the following GSAS webpage:
