Restaurants near NYU

We have compiled a (very partial) list of restaurants in the NYU/downtown area. Of course, Manhattan is famous for its many places to eat, so these are just some we have personally tried and enjoy.

7A - (7th St and Ave A) great trendy diner food, open 24 hours, dinner specials until 1am, full bar
CAFÉ ORLIN (41 St Mark's Place) Great breakfast, coffee, etc.; open late

Asian:

SEA - (2nd Ave between 4th and 5th Sts) good Thai food in a nice atmosphere for decent prices, beer and wine
RICE - (Mott St and Spring St) delicious Asian infusion; curries, noodles, tofu, rice; great design and atmosphere, popular, beer and wine
GREEN PAPAYA - (185 Sullivan St between Houston and Bleecker St) good Thai food, cozy atmosphere, lunch and dinner specials
CAFE ASEAN - (W. 10TH St between Greenwich and 6th Ave) Vietnamese food in a picturesque brownstone
SOBA-YA - (229 E. 9th St) very authentic Japanese noodle restaurant specializing in soba and udon dishes; many Japanese restaurants on this block
CHOGA - (145 Bleecker St) decent Korean restaurant with Japanese dishes
KELLEY AND PING - (Greene St between Houston and Prince St) trendy pan-Asian noodle house; place your order at the bar and grab a seat; good food and distinctive décor amongst the galleries of SoHo
GRAND STREET GOURMET - (213 Grand St near Mott St) very cheap, very good Chinese food located in the heart of Chinatown
VILLAGE MINGALA - (7th St near Bowery) good, cheap Burmese food

Caribbean:

DAPHNE'S - (14th St between 2nd and 3rd Aves) - good jerk and sorrel drink

Continental:

CAFÉ LE GAMIN - (Houston, near Sullivan St) Authentic French fare; good soups, quiches, salads, and coffee
CAFÉ MONA LISA - (Bleecker St and 7th Ave) Continental blend; good quiches, crèpes, salads, sandwiches
CAFÉ GITANES - (Mott St and Prince St) Authentic French; soups, salads, sandwiches, crèpes, coffee
PANE E CIOCCOLATE - (Waverly Pl and Mercer St) Continental blend; soups, salads, sandwiches, pasta
THE CORNELIA STREET CAFE (29 Cornelia Street) Brunch, lunch, and dinner, often with jazz or poetry readings downstairs

Indian:

BALUCHI'S - (Waverly Pl and 6th Ave) Good Indian food in a nice setting; half-price lunches on weekdays
HAVELI - (2nd Ave and 6th St) excellent Indian food
CAFÉ SPICE (72 University Pl) very good contemporary Indian bistro

**6th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues is full of little, good (and some not-so-good, so look carefully), cheap Indian places, most with live sitar music; under $10**

Italian:

FRANK'S - (5th St and 2nd Ave) excellent Italian food in a very intimate setting; very popular and gets crowded, open until 4am, full bar
MAX'S - (4th St and Ave B) excellent Italian food (same owners as Frank's), also popular and gets crowded, beer and wine
POST EAST - (6th St and 2nd Ave) good Italian food; not as crowded normally, full bar
PEPE ROSSO TO GO (Sullivan St between Houston and Prince St) satisfying Italian food; very small, but take-away is possible; second location is PEPE VERDE (Hudson St between Perry and W. 11 St)

Japanese:

GO SUSHI INC. - (3 Greenwich Ave near 6th and 8th Aves) good, fresh self-service sushi, bentoboxes, and soups, to stay or take-away
MARUMI (546 LaGuardia Place) Great Sushi, Super Unagi

Moroccan:

MOGADOR - (101 St. Mark's Place between 1st Ave and Ave A) amazing Moroccan food and large portions; very popular place

Vegetarian:

ANGELICA KITCHEN - (12th St and 2nd Ave) gourmet vegetarian/vegan food in a comfortable atmosphere
SOUEN - (13th St between 5th Ave and University Pl) good, large macrobiotic restaurant
