Where are antisymmetry and remnant movement leading us?

The research program linking hierarchical structure to linear order in a strict fashion (Kayne 1994) has often led to syntactic theories involving intriguing amounts of "remnant movement", building on work by den Besten & Webelhuth and Müller. Various versions of such theories have been proposed (e.g. Cinque, Koopman & Szabolcsi, Kayne & Pollock, among many others), only loosely related to each other.

Roughly ten years after the original proposal (Antisymmetry), and several years into its implementation via widespread remnant movement, where do we stand? This workshop seeks to bring together several researchers who have recently argued for various forms of such analyses, and some critics or neutral observers, for an assessment of this research program and insights into its next steps. Beyond the 12 invited speakers / commentators, our aim is to dedicate a lot of space to discussion. Thus each speaker speaks for 30mn followed by 40mn for discussion.

Discussion issues we are aiming at include how to restrict remnant movements, how to integrate their locality (if any) with better known aspects of locality, what the triggers for all these movements are, how (in)compatible the various proposals are, to what extent the resulting theory is truly more elegant or explanatory, how the presence of these movements interacts with our assumptions about the base-generated functional sequence, etc.

If you plan to attend, we strongly encourage you to preregister. Logistics in New York are complicated and having an estimate of the size of the attendance is precious (and preregistering does not force you to pay in advance!). Thank you!
