Conference location and accommodation
New York University is located in Greenwich Village, just north of SoHo, in an area full of restaurants, galleries, and stores. CUNY is located in Midtown, catercorner from the Empire State Building, in the very heart of Manhattan. Both are very accessible from all of Manhattan by subway, and relatively near to each other.
Hotels in NYC are expensive, but there are affordable options. We have compiled a list of links and suggestions. Many of the hotels have rooms with two beds; inquire about them specifically. You can cut the cost by arranging to share a room with a friend. We recommend that you make reservations early.
NOTE: some of these rates will be limited to a small selection of a hotels rooms, or a given hotel may be quite small, so please check with the hotel for the availability of these "economy" rooms. Rates quoted are simply price ranges as available on 10/15/00, and are for singles and doubles. Prices do not include New Yorks 13.25% hotel tax, nor the citys $2 a night occupancy tax.
Bottom-line
The cheapest rooms in the city are available at Youth Hostels. A listing of Youth Hostels in the New York City area can be found at the following link. Please remember that not all Hostels will accept reservations from non-Hostel members, or may quote substantially higher rates to non-members.
Our own friends have had pleasant experiences with Jazz on the Park, just a block away from Central Park, a 15-min subway ride from CUNY (20 minutes from NYU).
Bed & Breakfast
An alternative to hotel accomodations, New York City has a good number of bed & breakfasts. While by no means an exhaustive list of B&Bs in Manhattan, the following link (which includes a list of some B&Bs) came highly recommended to the conference organizers. New York University is nearest to those locations in the "downtown" section of the list.
New York University Guest Accomodations
For your convenience hotel reservations are available through NYU Guest Accommodations for attendees of the North East Linguistics Society 32nd Annual Meeting.
Reservations are limited to participants in University sponsored conferences and educational programs, alumni, current and prospective students and their immediate families, employees, faculty, lecturers, and visiting scholars and sports teams with NYU sponsors.
Other Featured Hotels
Please keep in mind that some of the hotels listed below are "Economy" no-frills establishments, and while they are quite clean, safe, and charming, you may be sharing a bath, might have to leave your room to find a telephone, and so forth. Please direct inquiries to the hotel about their specific accomodations.

Apple Core Hotels (taken from Budget Travel magazine, Sept/Oct 2000)
4 locations in Manhattan
- Quality Hotel & Suites Midtown (59 West 46th Street)
- Quality Hotel East Side (161 Lexington at 30th Street)
- Comfort Inn Midtown (129 West 46th Street)
- Best Western Manhattan (17 West 32nd Street)
(Rates start at $89 weekdays, $99-109 weekends including private bath; Continental breakfast included. "Family suites" for folks with kids sleep up to six for $139-189, and the Best Western offers Ninendo and on-demand childrens movies).
With four locations in Manhattan and its "name-brand" and associated level of services, Apple Core Hotels can potentially offer some of the best deals around. Although rates vary and management is cagey about listing a set price range, the chain is still worth a call. If quoted a higher rate by phone, inquire about 10 percent AAA and AARP discounts as well as the availability of smaller, more affordable rooms, especially at the Quality Hotel East Side. Try a "pointed inquiry" about whether rates can be found within the range listed above.
