Hotels and Hostels

New York University is located in Greenwich Village, just north of SoHo, in an area full of restaurants, galleries, and stores and easily accessible by subway. Hotels in NYC are expensive, but there are affordable options. They however tend to fill up early, so we strongly recommend that you make arrangement as soon as possible.

Here is a list of links and suggestions. Many of the hotels have rooms with two beds; inquire about them specifically. You can cut the cost by arranging to share a room with a friend. Please note that the rates below are indicative only, and might be available for only a small subset of the rooms of the hotel, so please check with the hotel for the availability of these "economy" rooms

NOTE: some of these rates will be limited to a small selection of rooms, or a given hotel may be quite small, so please check with the hotel for the availability of these "economy" rooms. Prices do not include New York’s 13.25% hotel tax, nor the city’s $2 a night occupancy tax.

Bottom-line: Youth Hostels

The cheapest rooms in the city are available at Youth Hostels. A listing of Youth Hostels in the New York City area can be found at the following link. Please remember that not all Hostels will accept reservations from non-Hostel members, or may quote substantially higher rates to non-members.

Youth Hostels in New York

Our own friends have had pleasant experiences with Jazz on the Park, just a block away from Central Park, a 20-min subway ride from NYU.

Bed & Breakfast

An alternative to hotel accomodations, New York City has a good number of bed & breakfasts. While by no means an exhaustive list of B&Bs in Manhattan, the following link (which includes a list of some B&Bs) came highly recommended to the conference organizers. New York University is nearest to those locations in the "downtown" section of the list.

Manhattan Lodgings, Inc.

Hotels

Please keep in mind that some of the hotels listed below are "Economy" no-frills establishments, and while they are quite clean, safe, and charming, you may be sharing a bath, might have to leave your room to find a telephone, and so forth. Please direct inquiries to the hotel about their specific accomodations.

More Affordable Hotels near NYU

These hotels are all convenient to NYU campus, at most a brisk ten-minute walk (or less by subway). The Washington Square is a bit pricier than the other hotels listed here, but it is literally on the edge of NYU’s campus, catercorner from Washington Square Park, and each room has a private bathroom. The Larchmont Hotel is also recommended for its convenience and atmosphere, while the Chelsea Star takes the cake for flavor and imagination.

Economy Hotels, Still in the City (Manhattan)

Although not within walking distance, these hotels are still a short subway ride from NYU, all feature bargain rates and have other features nearby to recommend them. The Amsterdam and Belleclaire, for example, are both situated near Central Park and its Museums and the Lincoln Center, while the Aladdin and Portland Square are just blocks from Times Square and the theater district.

4 locations in Manhattan

(Rates start at $89 weekdays, $99-109 weekends including private bath; Continental breakfast included. "Family suites" for folks with kids sleep up to six for $139-189, and the Best Western offers Ninendo and on-demand children’s movies).

With four locations in Manhattan and its "name-brand" and associated level of services, Apple Core Hotels can potentially offer some of the best deals around. Although rates vary and management is cagey about listing a set price range, the chain is still worth a call. If quoted a higher rate by phone, inquire about 10 percent AAA and AARP discounts as well as the availability of smaller, more affordable rooms, especially at the Quality Hotel East Side. Try a "pointed inquiry" about whether rates can be found within the range listed above.

A bit more expensive
