New York City Consortium in Latin American/Caribbean Studies

Since 1987 the Center has maintained a consortium with the Columbia University Institute for Latin American Studies (ILAS). More recently, CLACS and ILAS formed NYCCLAS, the New York City Consortium for Latin American Studies, an expanded collaboration between the two universities that offers cross-university class registrations for MA level students from both instututions as well as professional development opportunities and events for NYC teachers.

ILAS cooperates with NYU's Center for Latin American Studies (CLACS) allowing Master candidates from either school to get credit for courses on Latin American topics at either school. The courses are open to all NYU graduate students.

These courses are designed to supplement the NYU offerings. Registration in these courses requires the director’s permission; their enrollments are limited, and students may take no more than two courses during their M.A. work at CLACS.

The Center prints a schedule of classes every semester with selected Columbia courses. This list is available on this website in our courses page

How can I take graduate classes in Latin American Studies at Columbia ?

To take a class through the NYCCLAS Consortium at Columbia U.:

1. NYU students have between 4-6 Columbia courses to choose from. Decide which classes to take from the NYU course listing available at CLACS or in our courses page.
2. Fil out the cross registration form and attend the first class and obtain professor’s signature.
3. Obtain the necessary signature from CLACS. CLACS will keep one copy of this form.
4. Go to ILAS to obtain the necessary signatures there. See Eliza Kwon-Ahn or Tom Trebat. ILAS information can be found at the bottom of this form.
5. Make 2 copies of this form: 1 for your own records and one to be handed to Dean Caroline Kay, 6 th floor, SIPA building, at Columbia U. She will create ghost numbers for you at Columbia and ensure that you appear on the Columbia course lists.
Note: your NYU ID will be accepted at the CU library
• If you are graduating at the end of that semester, please inform the CLACS staff to ensure that your grade will be posted on time.
