Anthropology and literature.

This seminar will explore a series a work that try to span the gap between anthopology and literature, and more specifically a series of literary works that, under various guises, look in the direction of anthropology for their inspiration. It will focus on the French first half of the XXth century and will contextualize its fascination for what was hesitantly called primitivism both historically and culturally. We will read works (novels, travelogues, essays) by André Gide, Michel Leiris, Claude Lévi-Strauss.  André Malraux, Henri Michaux, Paul Morand,Paul Nizan, Victor Segalen.
