Lectures, Seminars, Conferences
The Department, La Maison Française, and the Institute of French Studies all regularly host eminent scholars from the U.S. and abroad.
Lectures and mini-seminars are held several times weekly and there
is a major conference usually held annually in the fall semester.
Recent speakers have included: André Baeyens; André Burguière; Denis Delbourg;
Manthia Diawara; Françoise Gaillard; René Girard; Michel Deguy;
Claude Simon; Pierre Assouline; Julia Kristeva; Edgar Morin; Pierre
Restany; and Hélène Cixous. The subjects of recent major conferences have been: "French Theory in America," "Looking for Ariel: Discussions
on/of Métissage," "Modalities of Performance in the Middle Ages,"
"Deconstruction is/in America," "Nietzsche Today" (in collaboration
with the German Department).
French Graduate Students Association & Colloquiums

The French Graduate Students Association serves as a forum for students on both the masters and doctoral
level. Through meetings and a regular dialogue with the department
administration, the FGSA provides an organized channel through which graduate students
voice their interests and concerns and make suggestions to the
faculty. Graduate student colloquiums are held once or twice a year
where students deliver papers or hold roundtables on research
topics.
