-A- The American Magic-Lantern Theater: Collection Size: Between 1,001 - 5,000 lantern slides Collection Strengths: Our collection specializes in the 250+/- illustrated sets (stories, songs, secret society, Bible) by Joseph Boggs Beale, including many of his own copies of his 2,000+/- slides, plus paintings, negatives, sketches, family material, etc. Other slides appro... Collection Dates: 1860-1879 to 1990-1999 Major period of collection development: 1980-90 (Collecting is still on-going) Intellectual Access: Personal requests, usually through the Magic-Lantern Society, or through our web site. Special Collections: Joseph Boggs Beale Collection, artist, 1881-1914, images created by Beale for C. W. Briggs Company, a national wholesaler of illustrated slides. Extensive information on Beale available. Stoddard's Collection. Carter's Collection, probably from the 1870s; gave shows up until 1900s. Special Strengths: American Magic-Lantern Theater presents slides in shows as they were originally to be seen, on-screen. Shows are in theaters, museums, fairs, film festivals, schools. Special Projects: Book, Cinema Before Film: The Victorian Magic-Lantern and America's First Great Screen in progress. Future plans: Continue giving shows in theater. Publish the book in two-three years, I hope! We do not allow use of the originals. Special Collections: James McClintock Collection: about 250 slides of historical Arizona scenes.McClintock may have taken these slides himself, and used them for promotion of Arizona at events throughout the US. He was the first State Historian. Special Projects: About 450 McClintock and other assorted lantern slides were cleaned and scanned four years ago and added to our photo database, which currently has 33,000 images in digital formats and full internet access.The slides were seldom used previously... Future Plans: Continue to store in a controlled environment. Future Plans: Rehouse in proper archival storage containers Date of Survey:05/18/2005 Contact Info: -B- Brooklyn Museum of Art, Libraries & Archives Collection Size: 10,001-20,000 Collection Strengths: Native American peoples (North, South, Central); Egypt; Asia; European cathedrals. Collection Dates: 1880-1899 to 1960-1969 Intellectual Access: Described to the series and subseries level in an archives finding aid; collection-level record in OPAC. Special Collections: Goodyear Archival Collection: images of European cathedrals (1895-1914) and Paris Exposition (1901). Special Projects: In 1990, we undertook a massive weeding of the library's collection, transferring copy stand slides to an educational institution, rehousing the slides into new drawer units, and creating a finding aid. We are currently involved in digitizing the images. Future Plans: Following the Goodyear digitization project, we will evaluate other portions of the collection and anticipate continuing efforts to digitize and make them available.
