Technical examination and materials analysis of paintings carried out in the Kress Program in Paintings Conservation have provided essential information for the conservation treatment and long-term preservation of
Old Master works in the Kress collection, and have created a better
understanding of material composition, artists’ techniques and workshop practices. This
research, carried out in collaboration with other conservators, conservation scientists and
art historians, has provided new information about the authorship, function, authenticity
and original context to which these paintings belonged.
