Upcoming issues of Victorian
Literature and Culture:
- Volume 36, Number 2 with an Editors' Topic, "Food and the Victorians," edited by Ross G. Forman and Suzanne Daly.
- Volume 38, Number 1 with an Editors’ Topic, “Victorian Cosmopolitanisms,” edited by Tanya Agathocleous and Jason R. Rudy.
Were the Victorians cosmopolitan? Do contemporary theories of cosmopolitanism offer a suitable framework for describing the British nineteenth century? We invite submissions that illuminate the historical and conceptual implications of cosmopolitanism for the Victorian era. Specific areas of inquiry may include but should not be limited to: the historicity of cosmopolitanism (periodization;
characteristics of specifically Victorian forms of cosmopolitanism); ethical and political implications of cosmopolitanism (in the context of liberalism, nationalism, imperialism, universalism; race, class, gender, and sexuality); aesthetics (taste and cosmopolitanism, comparative literatures, translations, "culture"); science and technology (travel, communication, the rise of the scientific disciplines); and the places of cosmopolitanism (the empire, the nation, the city, the salon, the Great Exhibition, the museum). Historical, literary, cultural, and theoretical
approaches are all welcome.
Send electronic submissions as attachments to both Tanya Agathocleous
(tanya.agathocleous@yale.edu)
and Jason R. Rudy (jrrudy@umd.edu).
