Christian Tryon - Research Sites
I. Kapthurin Formation

Tugen homestead (foreground), Kapthurin Formation sediments (middle ground beyond the Ndau River streambed), and Rift Valley escarpment (background), looking south.

Excavations at Koimot Locus 1, Kapthurin Fm., Kenya

Bernard ‘Kanyenze’ Ngeneo, discoverer of KNM-ER1470, excavating in the Kapthurin Fm

Boniface Kimeu, discoverer of the type specimen
of the Miocene ape Equatorius, excavating in
the Kapthurin Fm.

Levallois flakes and points, Koimilot Locus 2,
Kapthurin Formation, Kenya.

Bedded Tuff Member sediments. More resistant (prominent) layers are volcanic ash deposits. Artifacts and fauna occur in the intervening river- and lake-margin sediments.

Backscattered electron image of basaltic
tephra (volcanic ash), Bedded Tuff Member,
Kapthurin Formation, Kenya.

Bedded Tuff Member exposures at the GnJh-15 excavations, wth project director Sally McBrearty
(U. of Connecticut).

II. Kapedo Tuffs

Survey at the foot of the volcano Silali,
Gregory Rift Valley, Kenya.

Localized doum palms near the Kapedo hot springs
that are the source of the Suguta River. Western rift
escarpment in the background.

sediments at the Mountain Foot Site.

Excavation in progress in Member 14 of the
Olorgesaile Formation.

IV. Wasiriya Beds

V. Kaletepe

-
-

Excavations at Kaletepe Deresi 3, showing parallel
trenches within the Gölludaĝ volcanic complex.

Profile of the upstream excavation, project co-director
Steve Kuhn (U. of Arizona) for scale.
-

Project co-director Ludovic Slimak (CNRS) and Christian Tryon
sampling tephra at Kaletepe Deresi 3. Note ledge of rhyolite
bedrock at base of the excavation.
