This double-page spread comes from a Shiseido publication, Gofujin Techo, or Lady’s Handbook, which featured articles on lifestyle, art, and urban issues. The contents encompassed everything from Western appliances, such as sewing machines, to home goods, such as carpets and furniture, to traditional Japanese textiles. This illustration depicts the so-called "double life," which mixed the imported and the traditional. Strolling through the Ginza are a kimono-clad Japanese woman sporting a Western fringed scarf and her more modern companion, who is garbed in a chic cloche hat and low-waisted blouson top. The Shiseido Parlour building on the right identifies the neighborhood as Tokyo’s most fashionable. Ginza
