A Day with a Rainbow Flower Vases #1 and #3 were designed for a solo exhibition at the Galerie Yves Gastou in Paris. Captivated by samples of brilliantly colored acrylic, Kuramata placed them on his white desktop and arranged and rearranged them in various combinations that inspired a series of tables and flower vases. In all these pieces, the colored acrylic seems suspended in space, absorbing and transmitting light in the manner of a liquid or gas. Communicating rarefied sensations of transparency, weightlessness, geometry, and luminosity along with the vulgar joy of shiny colored plastic, they achieve a particularly modern kind of poetry. |
