Here Erró not only emphasizes modernism’s graphic qualities—and its formal similarities with comic-book imagery—but also cleverly subverts the canons of art history to reveal a certain “Pop” art avant la lettre in painting of the 1930s. The series title, Huit Paysages, refers to a standard-size canvas often used by French landscape painters.
