In the series Huit Paysages (Eight Landscapes), works by modernist artists such as Fernand Léger or Pablo Picasso are paired with characters from comic books. Here Erró not only emphasizes modernism’s graphic qualities—and its formal similarities with comic-book imagery—but also cleverly subverts the canons of art history to reveal a certain “Pop” art avant la lettre in painting of the 1930s. The series title, Huit Paysages, refers to a standard-size canvas often used by French landscape painters.
