Jonathan Pillow is currently an assistant professor of psychology and
neurobiology at the University of Texas at Austin. His research
focuses on statistical models of neural systems and human perceptual
abilities, and seeks to build theories to explain how neurons process
information about the external sensory environment.
Jonathan hails from Phoenix, Arizona, studied mathematics and
philosophy at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and then spent a
year studying Arabic and French North African Literature on a
Fulbright fellowship in Morocco. After that, he moved to New York to
begin graduate school at NYU, and joined the graduate forum during its
inaugural year (2001-2002). He received a Ph.D. in Neural Science
from NYU in 2005, and then moved to London for 3 years as a
postdoctoral fellow in the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at
UCL. In January 2009, he moved to Austin, TX to begin his current
position. When not writing grants, stressing about tenure, or
reminiscing about New York, Jonathan enjoys running, soccer, and
exploring the Texas hill county with his wife Carolyn, daughter Daisy,
and dog Lovemore.
