An excellent report on the need to change the traditional single-discipline model of graduate education in the natural sciences in response to the complex global issues of scientific challenges in the 21st century.
"The Ph.D.: A Tapestry of Change for the 21st Century" by Jody Nyquist (2002, November/December) from the magazine Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, 34 (6),12-20 is an interesting report that discusses the evolving nature of the Ph.D. program and the need to enhance it in many ways, with interdisciplinarity being one factor.
Their website is unfortunately not completely up to date, but the Society for Literature and Science and their annual meetings are a great place for everyone interested in interdisciplinary exchange.
