Parents

Though many of our students have probably been out of the nest for some time before they choose to study abroad, sending one’s child to the other side of the world can be understandably unnerving for a parent. Rest assured that at NYU in Shanghai, we do our best to ensure the health, safety, and happiness of our students during their time in China.

Our affiliation with New York University allows us to provide a wide network of resources to support our students wherever they are in the world. The primary role of the NYU in Shanghai Student Life staff is to be a local resource and support system for our students. We plan activities and trips that help our students integrate into Chinese life and experience Chinese culture. We facilitate students’ access to Shanghai’s many western medical facilities and coordinate health insurance coverage. We also enforce necessary housing and safety policies to maintain a safe environment within our academic center and NYU-sponsored housing.

Staying informed and involved in your child’s study abroad preparation and experience may help parents feel more at ease. In addition to the information provided on this website, the NYU Global Office in New York provides a number of services to keep parents informed and involved, including a pre-departure online-chat between NYU Global staff and the parents of prospective students. For more information about the resources offered by NYU Global to the parents of study abroad students, please see the study abroad parents’ website at http://www.nyu.edu/studyabroad/shanghai/parents.html/.

If you have any questions about the NYU Study Abroad experience, you may contact our Parents Communication Coordinator, Ellen Katradis, at (212) 992-9941 or at global.parents@nyu.edu. She is happy to talk to all parents about NYU study abroad programs.
