Every student at NYU in Shanghai is required to study Mandarin Chinese throughout the semester. The Chinese language program offers Chinese classes from beginner through advanced levels, giving special attention to listening and speaking in order to help students to feel more comfortable communicating with locals and navigating the city. As best suits language courses, all the classes are small in size and excellent in teaching quality. Compared to other Chinese programs in China, at NYU in Shanghai the Chinese teachers work on a full-time basis with at least three years experience teaching Chinese to American college students. Besides our own, locally-hired teachers, NYU in Shanghai also enlists professional teachers from the International College of Chinese studies at East China Normal University (ECNU) to be our instructors.
In addition to regular sessions in the classroom, the Chinese classes take advantage of the setting of Shanghai, providing a genuine Chinese language environment out of class, allowing students daily access to practicing Chinese language and experiencing Chinese culture. This is a great incentive for serious students of Chinese. Four months of study are aimed at helping students improve their Chinese proficiency and learn more about China as a whole.
